Motion Graphics and Animation.

"...Most animators draw their films frame by frame ... I collect, grow, and scavenge my frames."

David Montgomery – 2013 and 2014

Another of our featured artists, David Montgomery, exhibited fascinating digital art using natural images and demonstrated the power of collaboration, the incredible surprise when many creative minds contribute different thinking.

Dandelion Free Culture

Dandelion Free Culture is an exploration of seed and culture dispersal through the digital distribution of David Montgomery’s experimental animation.

“I consider downloading and remixing these clips available from archive.org to be a much more active engagement with my art than a typical youtube or vimeo view,” David said. “All of this content is licensed CC BY-SA 3.0.”

Dandelion Free Culture manifests itself as individual edits of the Dandelion Animation hosted at the Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/DandelionFreeCulture. These edits originate from all over the world. Montgomery will curate a program of 6 – 8 of the strongest edits and have a synced animation of a map showing the origination of the currently playing edit. This goes along with the seed dispersal theme.

Also, since all of the animation is Creative Commons licensed area students are encouraged to create their own edits as well.

ARTIST STATEMENT: David C. Montgomery, Experimental Animation and Video Art – Most animators draw their films frame by frame or model and animate them using 3D software. I collect, grow, and scavenge my frames. Subtle differences (genetic variability) between one frame or specimen and the next create hypnotic, pulsing motion. I imagined that since the imagery for my films already existed and didn’t have to be created from scratch I’d discovered some clever shortcut in the animation process. I hadn’t. The flatbed scanner I use to create the grainy, surrealist images can take up to 20 minutes to complete a 2400 dpi pass. I spend weeks, sometimes months, in After Effects arranging and correcting thousands of images. My process is just as tedious as any of the more traditional forms of animation. Conveniently though common plants and weeds like Oxalis pes caprae, Medicago polymorpha, Salvia lyrata, Lamium purpureum, or Ipomoea cairica are little films growing right outside my front door.
